Noel is located in the far southwest corner of Missouri. It is situated on the Elk River, and is ringed by timbered Ozark mountains. Noel is centrally located for canoe trips down the Elk River and it's tributaries of Big Sugar Creek and Indian Creek. Noel is the canoe capital of the Ozarks. It is an outdoors mans paradise, Elk River is one of the premiere small mouth bass rivers in the state. Besides fishing and canoeing there are several caves to explore in the area and across the state line in Arkansas. Noel is one of the few "Christmas Cities" in America, along with North Pole, Alaska, Christmas, Michigan, Santa Claus, Indiana and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Each year, tens of thousands of Christmas cards and letters are sent to the Noel Post Office during the holiday season to be stamped with a postmark reading, "Noel, Mo. - 'The Christmas City in the Ozark Vacation Land.'"

In 1925 Marx Cheney bought a club house and changed the name to Shadow Lake. He brought in bands and the place blossomed with business. Shadow lake established a national reputation in 1938 when the movie "Jesse James" was filmed here in McDonald County. Shadow Lake was the headquarters for stars: Henry Fonda, Tyrone Power, Nancy Kelly and Randolph Scott. The movie was filmed in several different locations here in McDonald County but the bulk of the filming was in Noel and on the square in Pineville, our county seat. They used all local people for the extras in the movie. One local extra later made a name for himself in Hollywood. Dabbs Greer a native of McDonald County made his film debut in the movie "Jesse James". He would star in several movies such as - "I Want to Live" 1958, "Roustabout", 1964 and "The Green Mile", 1999. He was best know for his work in TV Series - as the storekeeper Wilbur Jonas in "Gunsmoke" 1955-1962, Reverend Robert Alden "Little House on the Prairie" 1974-1982 and Reverend Henry Novotny "Picket Fences" 1992-1996. His hometown of Anderson, Mo. dedicated Dabbs Greer "Town Hole" Park (which is situated on the banks of Indian Creek and is a favorite swimming spot for families in town) in his honor.
