Luray Caverns was discovered on August 13, 1878. The cave was exhibited within a few days of its discovery and has attracted such interest, that it is the most popular cave on the eastern seaboard today. The formation of Luray Caverns began approximately 400 million years ago when a continental shift occured forming the Blue Ridge Mountains. Through a process called hollowing out, the fissured limestone caused by the shift began to erode and dissolve, creating small rifts. Eventually, water began to fill these openings, enlarging the crevices. As the water droplets fell from the ceiling of the cavern, they left calcite deposits that formed stalactites and the water that fell to the floor formed stalagmites. this process, combined with the series of geological events that occured millions of years ago, created Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns is considered to be "active", which means that its formations continue to grow today.
