    hahah if you can believe it I used Western Red Cedar. It's super cheap at my lumber yard right now. The downside is I had to shellac and wax it BEFORE I glued the strips, etc.

    So that means I can't really sand it flat at the end, but since it has a very specific use case I'm not too concerned. The trick really is the shellac. I'm a big fan of hand made shellac. The "black" shellac on the dark boards really looks stunning doesn't it? Well at least it does to me :)

    I've got similarly treated pieces in my other album.

    Thanks all! Having fun with it, needs more support so I'm adding some mdf to the bottom tomorrow, darn glue takes SO long to dry.

    Looking sharp. I'll always remember my first chess board... made it in 7th grade. Walnut and maple. I thought I ruined it by sanding one corner of squares too much. But my shop teacher showed me how to salvage it. Make sure you post the finished results. Great job.
