Is the grid over the face an allusion to Nabokov's comment that he first thought of the idea for Lolita when he read a newspaper article about a chimp taught to draw.  The first thing it drew was a picture of the bars of its cage.  Lolita, Nabokov said, is the picture of the bars of HH's cage.
