Local Fayre

September 12th 2009 Is the highlight event of year for many in the Gloucester, Hereford And Forest of Dean areas as the small town of Newent plays host once again to this unique annual celebration of the noble onion. Part horticultural show, part funfair and yet despite its size feels as friendly as a villige fete and this amazing Fayre’s history can be traced back a staggering 800 years to the 13th century.

Over one hundred stalls line the high street with musicians, dancers, childrens entertainers making appearences and performing both on the stage by the memorial hall and in the street itself so be prepared to take your time when things get busy.

At one pm in the Market Square sees the spectacle reach fever pitch with a fiendish challenge and assault of the senses that makes grown men cry, it could only be the world famous onion eating competition. Contestants in each of the men’s and women’s events attempt to chomp their way through a six ounce raw onion, with the quickest being awarded with a trophy and the honor of being the winner for the year. Watch out for local hero Brian Duffield the Guinness Record holder, who holds a time of 1 minute and 29 seconds.
