Chevy Volt

Pre-production prototype of Chevy Volt extended range electric vehicle. Production date: November 2010.
Provisional EPA city mileage is 230 mpg !!
Unlike a hybrid that has two drivetrains -- an electric and a traditional combustion engine -- the Volt will drive 40 miles on lithium-ion batteries alone, then a small gas-powered generator turns on to charge the battery. Total range will be approx. 350 miles, unlike ANY electric competitor. Only the battery drives the wheels. At today's prices, it will cost about 2 cents/mile vs. 12-13 cents/mile for a standard car and about 8 cents/mile for a Toyota Prius. It will cost about 80 cents for a full charge of the batteries, and cost about the same as your refrigerator to power.
If you drive 40 miles or less per day, you will NEVER use gasoline.
This vehicle is in full production engineering now (the batteries are being tested down the hall from my office). Photos taken on Friday, Sept 19 at the GM Technical Center employee celebration of GM's 100th birthday.
