Accumulations of ice can increase the branch weight of trees by 30 times or more. Ice formation generally ranges from a trace to 1 inch in additional stem diameter. Accumulations between 1/4 and 1/2 inch can cause small branches and weak limbs to break, while 1/2-inch to 1-inch accumulations can cause larger branches to break.

The weight of ice can tear down power and telephone lines The weight of the ice itself can easily snap power lines and also break and bring down power/utility poles; even the big steel frame ones.  Just one quarter of an inch of ice accumulation can add about 500 pounds of weight per line span!

Do you get this kind of weather every year?

We usually do not get ice bringing down trees like we just did.  This was caused by cold temperatures while it was still raining.  It caused a lot of ice buildup that the trees couldn't hold.  Lost electricity for about 3 days, some will lose it for over a week.  Usually will get up to a foot of snow dumped on us now and again.
