Stratego is a kind of war game... The meaning is to capture the flag! The Marshal is the highest "soldier in rank" and can only be beaten by the "lowest in rank "    (The Spy). So the Spy has to take care not to be taken by even a scout, who is alowed to jump as far as he can, if there is nothing on his way to stop him. The Bombs can only be captured by "Miners" (the 3rd lowest piece). I learned this game before Chess, and is quit difficult because you need a very good memory also! You have to find out where your opponents pieces are by using a scout, or a low piece, or just take the gamble and go with a captain/or major ... but if you get on a bomb or higher piece , you do lose your piece!

In the Netherlands , you can even become "Dutch Champion" , as there is ones a year an huge Tournament in a hall, so with filled with lots of stratego boards!

I just saw, that they sell it in New Zealand too! Than it is produced by the "Game Factory"  MB . In The Netherlands it is sold by "Jumbo" The best way to defend your flag is Put some Bombs arround it , only miners can capture this! So a strong Army without miners, cannot win if the flag is behind bombs... You than play for a draw, if the opponent still has them, You better try to get them! You may move only forwards, backwards and sideways , not diagonal. The spy can beat the Marshal but also the other way arround, so you touch the play-piece and say your rank, is it lower , than you get the piece, so by Spy on Marshal , the Spy wins... By Marshal on Spy, the Marshal wins. As You cannot see were the opponent is coming with, you need a very good memory also!

Ha hahaha....I playerd this a lot with my brother long time ago.....I CHALLENGE YOU...If there is online stratego ;)

I had played as a kid.then not for like 30 years. till a friend who I beat in chess all the time, came by with it.we played he would have won but because there was a bright lite behind him I found I could see through his men he was so mad when he lost he even left his game I told a few others we had a great laugh  and told him 2 weeks later .   lol  jim
