My handmade chess set

Submitted by seagirl on Sun, 05/18/2008 at 3:48am.

I want to share with you my chess set project.
Me and my friend we are carving handmade ceramic chess - 3rd crusade theme. This is the rough sculptures still.
All pieces are weighted with steal core. King is 4.3" tall and the base is around 3.5 sq. inchess. The pieces are at different stage of carving. Black queen is one of the newest and thats why she looks so miserable :D
Sorry for the quality of the pics but i took them with my cellphone.
Please provide me with your oppinion. I whould like to recieve ideas from you all. All critics are welcomed too :)
Next stage is polishing.. coloring and glazing. So ill be appreciate to help me with coloring. Is it better to be one color or wooden looklike or colorful?
Enjoy! :)

You have a great talent! I would paint the base according to the color of the piece (black or white...or whatever other two colors you might like). The piece in itself may look classier if it's just one color all through. But if you make the board colourful and fun, then perhaps it would look great to have those pieces painted accordingly.

Generic Comment:  when shaping/painting them, you want the back of the heads to be distinctly different so that there isn't any confusion - it really doesn't matter a lot which is different, as long as there is readily apparent differentiation.

Either size or shape or color between pawns and bishops or between bishops and queen.

also, need to ensure differentiation between king and queen.

Nice set, are you negotiating with one of the chess set manufacturers for patent on your designs??

looks like you have done all that, from the views you show.

That is outstanding work.  Wish I had 1/10 of your talent.  The best I could do would be a toothpick and that would probably take 2 trys.
