My Ride and Why...

I have been driving some sort of performance car or "sleepers" since the mid seventy's.  About twelve years ago my wife and I, before children, decided to build a new home, which would incorporate an over sized garage.

The garage space was to house my soon to be project car.  The garage is awesome, twelve foot ceiling, a horizontal beam for a future engine hoist, pad room space for a short lift, and plenty of room for tools and an extra short block, all the things us gear heads dream of.

About a month after we moved in, barely settled, my wife gave me the wonderful news that we were expecting.  We ended up with a total of four children in the following four years.  I love them all dearly, and would not have it any other way, but my project car days are pretty much over, at least until college is done for all four.

The third garage slot is filled with a mixture of sports equipment, bikes, and shapely colorful objects, none of which resemble a "dad" toy.  But the want for one never went away.  Until I found the solution...

The nuts and bolts:

2005 GMC Yukon XL Denali  (seats 7 comfortably, all with three point harnesses)

6.0L small block with four bolt mains

stock heads ported and polished, upgraded head gaskets

Magnuson MagnaCharger with Radix and Airaid cold air, working hood scoop

Headers, free flow cat and mufflers

B&M trans with torque conv

Baer brakes with drilled and slotted

estimated 500 horse power (awd can't be dyno'd, remember it snows here and this is a daily driver) 480lbs torq, based on Magnuson's data base

Vic, you and I have alot in common.  I am a gear nut and tool maniac.  I do all of my own DIY's on my cars.  I have a 98 BMW 740il (just trick out with dual exhuasts tips), a 98 Olds Bravada and a Hurst 442 Olds that I am restoring.  Keep up the great work.  We need more car enthusiasts, especially those that play CHESS!

I wish I had your garage. Very nice.

Nice Vic!

Before kids, marriage, and such I too worked on my own cars. My first one was a collectors Datsun 2000 convertible which my sister wreaked in only two months after I owned it.It was fast and fun to drive. I really missed this car. I bought and repaired Jeep Willy to drive around while I built my muscle cars.

I then had a 67 Mustang with a 429 Boss, I modified the trunk to accomodate 50's, put in roll bars and raced it at the local strip. My brother still has the car as I gave it to him when I got my Vette.

My first vet was a 77 automatic burgandy red with the L82 engine. I did not care for the auto, plus an ex-girlfriend smashed the rear window and threw in a dozen eggs, so I traded it for a 75 British Green with the same engine, L82, but with a three speed stick! I could stand still in first, until I wasted the tires!

I kept that car for a long time but my next project car was a 1971 Mach 1 Mustang. Man was this car big! I was very strong with a 351 Windsor engine, 4 barrell Holley carb and 4 speed racing tranny that I put it. Well one day the engine blew and I sold it to a kid who wanted to put in a new one.

This was all before I went into the Army also. While there I drove some real power machines! The real Humvee! M1-Abrams, M113APC and Bradleys

Between then and now I have owned a plethora of cars everything from Ford, Dodge, Jeep (6 of them from Willy to Grand Cherokee), VW (two Bugs, GTI, Bus Vanagon 1967 and 79 Wolfsburg Edition, and Jetta) Custom Van, many 4 wheel drives and a few I have forgotten.

Currently I drive a 05 Jetta that is paid for and gets good gas milage. Not sure what I am going to get next.?

Pictures not mine but nearest approximation I could find.

Keyif,

What a collection!  And ex girlfriend stories to boot!

I had a 77 L82 (L48) Vette also.  I spent many hours and dollars getting it set up to go fast on the street.  Had a mechanic buddy pull the stock engine out and we put in a LT1 350hp crate motor in it, no smog devices plus many other goodies.  I was broke for over a year.  We used to race from Schaumburg to Barrington and back when there were no traffic lights, no houses, no nothin' out West of Chicago.  Back then we all used Marshal high output driving lights with the stock beams.  It was awesome to watch two cars lighting up the black night at 100+ on the rolling hills of Route 59 just South of Barrington.
