gimmewuchagot
OMG 1/4 dont know what FIDE president is?!
kidding me! such a shame.....
truthteller908
Based my answer simply on the guy's name. Call it biased call it what you want. But for some reason I find that a lot of Russian names just sound evil to me.

The current FIDE President is delusional (abducted by space aliens), corrupt, a thief, a repressive dictator and completely ineffective for international chess. The 2010 FIDE election had all the legitimacy of a Soviet or Iranian election (or the US presidential election of 2000). Chess will grow despite FIDE.

What gets me is, i'm not sure how you pronounce his surname??

In my opinion Karpov should be president!
the_aleph
Shouldn't someone start a breakaway chess organisation? Oh wait, didn't they try that?

Why do we need an insane men to decide important things in the chess world?
He even dosen't have a chess title

Ilyumzhinov is a total nut case. He actually believes he was abducted by aliens. I'm not joking. Secondly, he is a pathetic organiser (remember his lousy handling of Toiletgate?) And then he is always trying to organize high profile tournaments in totalitarian states; one FIDE world championship in Bagdad under Sadaam, another in Libya, and I believe there were even plans for one in Myanmar. Seriously, what next? North Korea?
Bird of a feather folk together. Ilyumzhinov is a mentally disturbed dictator so of course he is partial to dictatorships.
He may have a lot of money but personally I think he's the worst thing that happen to chess, ever.
Socro
AFAIK Ilyumzhinov was a national master in USSR.

on the already existing comments or discussion points we can have a like/unlike vote section so you can keep track of a point. we can't add an existing comment.

It really is a shame that Karpov didn't get it. More people know his name and he's more personable. As was stated previously, I and most of the chess players I know don't really associate the name Ilyumzhinov with chess. We associate it with nothing because we've never heard of it before!

I think the fourth choice should have been: "Who's Kirsan Ilyumzhinov?"

Chess could be huge someday if we could get more organized. Look at what poker has become in the last decade. Poker back in the 70's and 80's used to have a minimal following and now it is massive. Karpov was the man that could have united the chess community. Ilyumzhinov has had his chance and his results are not impressive.
alone_again_mafia
Easy to understand the result .Ilyumzhinov has a lot of money .
ih8sens
It's unbelievable. Karpov could easily be the face of chess. Most chess players I talk to don't even know who Ilyumzhinov is. Another... I don't even know how many years... with no money in chess. Lovely :P
