Have you ever "under-promoted" in a real game?

Have you ever "under-promoted" in a real game?

  • No, I've always Queened.
  • Yes, but just to show off.
  • Yes. (My set doesn't have extra Queens!)
  • Yes, to avoid giving stalemate!
  • Yes, because a Knight was more effective!

After a second queen (or even my original queen), I often promote to a rook because a rook could just as easily checkmate with few pieces on the board. This prevents stalemate.

I sometimes promote to a rook to prevent stalemate. I mean, how stupid do you feel when you could have won, but instead got in stalemate?

I underpromoted several decades ago, to a rook. I thought a rook was simpler.. I've rarely had the chance to promote since then.. It's been tough..Cry

In one OTB game I under-promoted 7 bishops, the kid I did it against thought it was funny though

Don't often get the chance, of course, but I love to have a bunch of Queens.

It could be that they're hoping for a draw. It's not like mate is imminent. I'd say deliberately underpromoting is more offensive than fighting to the end, but that could be just me.

I promoted to knight dozens of times, always in lasker trap. Doesn't happens to me anymore since people over ~1500 even if they fall for the trap, they don't fall all the way trough.

If it's just king vs. king and pawn and I promote, I always promote to a rook
