shouldn't it be "portion", as opposed to proportion ???

It is difficult, I think I have only read one or two books cover to cover, some I have read most of, and some very little.

I think you should also ask "what % of the book, of those books, you read?"  Plenty of books I started reading and realized either: 1) this is so far over my head I literally can't see a single thing he's talking about at this point (3 or 4 chapters in is usually when my ego cedes ground to my befuddlement); or 2) "oh, THAT'S why no one at the top levels plays this opening and it is considered a dubious opening and I can't in good conscience play this opening expecting to draw let alone win."

I've had to read some books to understand the books I stopped reading because they were over my head-- raising my percentage of books read a lot.  Also, books like MCO or Chess Openings Theory and Practice, or the Chess Opening Essentials series are less meant to be read cover to cover-- but the COE series (and I suspect the ones like that, that get recommended more often here) has great introductory sections, making it (or them), IMHO, better reads than say even the old Chess Openings Theory and Practice and especially MCO.
