    ... the point isn't for the pawn and bishop to just stay there, the point is that the bishop's placement prevents the back rook from capturing on d8 after you've promoted your pawn

    it's interesting, the point is that for the pawn to be promoted, you need to interchange your peaces, defensed by the pawn, so when your pieces are captured, you get the pawn promoted. that's why the rook and the bishop are situated at e8
