This is a classic checkmate but I must confess I missed the 2nd more I moved to Nd3 looking to win a R for a N
ditto LloydG. in all future situations let us find the forced checkmate first.
too many smothered mates on here but hey free rating
Yeah, too many smothered/Philidor's mate!
Seems like some of us need the practice ;)
word up Phil
mate anybody shud know
Problems rated ~200 points higher than these have fewer smothered mates & more Boden's mates.
Played many a smothered mate on the trainer, and finally won one.
I went for Ng4 with a revealed check looking for a free bishop if the king is just moved out, or the bishop and rook for a knight if white blocks with the bishop on e3.
I don't understand why this is not a mate in 2
that is two moves shorter than
i love that mate
warham, Qg1 on the first move will be answered Kxg1, and then you've thrown away your queen, the chance of the smoothered mate and almost certainly the game.
Nf2 and Nh3 are required first so that the rook has to be the capturing piece, as the queen is protected from recapture by the king from the knight.
I agree with IHaveaDream about the amount of smothered mates. But, it took me about 20+ times before I started to consistently get them.
My Score: 1361 (+14
I dont understand why not Qg1 follwed by RxQg1 and mate with Nf2????
Because if you play Qg1 first, then KxG1! King can take Queen, Rook doesn't have to. After the Knight jumps to h3, King cannot take on Qg1, because Knight is covering it. Classic smothered mate pattern, fun when you memorize it!
