    Yup.  I now know my "True" rating is probably about where I'm at in the mid-1700's, but I had just joined chess.com and after several games, I honestly thought that I was 1400-1600.  That said, I'm sure there are others with much higher ratings in real life who DO know where they stand.  But I'm not seriously concerned here, as there are no consequences other than a tough game.  In real life tournaments it's called Sandbagging, and it's usually used to win the prize money in a lower rated tournament.  That's where it's actually serious.

    Funny thing about these huge tournaments. If you win one seems like that just means you're the best of the people who didn't play enough games to get a realistic rating by the start. I think they should have a lower RD rating requirement for these big ones.

    thanks for the nice thoughts vsop! Yes I agree there was a nice "atmosphere" in our group, with lots of polite sporting players. You didn't get lucky, you won more games than anyone else. Looking forward to playing you in a friendly soon, just send the invite.

    Well, it looks like i am going to advance. I would like to thank Davester 917, muco23 ,rethi and NeeJat for the honor or excellent  and fair play. Honestly,.. i got lucky.I would like to take this opportunity to thank the several 2000+ players  of honor that have had the decency to resign the tournament..... for players rated 1400-1600. I wish all that advance the beast of luck and look forward to some great play. vsopwill

    10 weeks till I graduate...  anybody think the tournament will finish before then?

    It's official.  I can sleep for the rest of the tournament, I'm out of the running.  However, the 2100+ rated player will be getting through, not terribly surprising.  Well, it's surprising that he's in the tournament at all, but not surprising he's moving through, lol.

    Stubborn Donkey, You look strong, a shoe in. Anchovey...LOL you do know you have finished only one game.!! i looked and you still could win. Hang in there.... If it helps, and you require sleep, you can always take mini naps...while drivingLaughing

    @vsopwill

    My group:

    2 17XX players (one is me)
    2 16XX

    1 14XX

    1 TO-ed all his games

    It's going fine so far, I haven't finished a game yet (though I have a material advantage of a queen and two minor pieces in one game vs the 14XX, and not counting the TO player of course). Besides the TO guy, four games have finished so far in my group, one of them is a loss for the other 17XX guy (he also has two wins so far) so I'd say I'm still in it with a solid chance to advance.

    @vsopwill: All is well for me, thanks.  I'm guaranteed not to get past this round, but I'll play the games out anyhow.  Then I'll go back to sleep.

    Hay Anchovie and stubborn Donkey. How is the tourney going for you fine gentlemen. I hope well. I got lucky on my draw. The players are at around 1700 tops. Everyone seems to be honorable players. Everyone moves faster then me. But at my age...I do everything a lot slower....well.... except for ......Laughing

    you don't lose points for matches you don't play a move in. You get knocked out of the tourney but your ranking stays the same
