Sorry, guys, for the long vacation. Really couldn't avoid it, the Internet connection was erratic and (quite frankly) I was having a great time! Hope you enjoyed your summer as much. Now I'm back, you can kick my butt on the board... :-)

I think this is the last tournament I will play in that allows vacation time - there is always one who seems to sabatoge the whole thing for everyone else.

Looks like there is just one person holding up round 3, and that person has just a few hours left - if he doesn't come back the third round might start today.

You have to pay attention, Cchess. I'm guessing you didn't know the 2nd round started and lost all your games on time.

Argh. Tournament starts in the middle of a move and then the new Modem burns out after 12 hours of operation. Thanks AT&T. :/

Great, Round 2 is going to start just as I go away somewhere where I won't have internet... Only for a few days though, so I won't become vacation guy!

    [edit] Oh. He's still playing.

The most likely thing that has happened here, and in most cases, is that the hold-up guy became unable to play (no internet, natural disaster, or even death?! who knows?), then instead of timing out he is auto put on vac for 1.5 months. Thus it seems the fault lies in the auto vac rule. It should be removed or at least changed so premium members still automatically go on vac instead of timing out, but only for say 10 days. Anyway goodluck everyone in round 2

the holdup guy, steveroo, has less than 24 hrs of vacation time left - then we can continue this tournament - I am all for vacation time, but those that abuse it should be blocked from playing future tournaments!

It looks like the tournament is being held up by one person named steveroo who has about 11 days of vacation left. If he comes back and starts playing I will scream.

there are some 'no vacation' tournemants. usually you have to accept it as a condition before signing up.

The tournament I am in now, everyone is done except for the vacationer all the games with him needs another month if he came back to play.

I would like to see some tournaments stipulate "no vacation" or limit it to so many days....I think 10-14 days is plenty for vacation time...not 30-40 days.

Maybe there needs to be a feature that checks if those games where players are on vacation are necessary to finish in order to begin the next round. If the games aren't going to change who progresses to the next round, then let the tournament continue and let those games stay active outside of the tournament. This wouldn't solve every situation, but it would probably solve quite a bit of them.

I just don't understand why we have to wait for every game to be complete before moving on to the next bracket if the players we're waiting on do not have a shot at progressing.

    RE: The vacation drama:

I had to use my own vacation time a few times because of some personal issues which prevented me from just playing through all of my games every day. Thus I don't think it would be fair if vacation time was removed and someone who had other issues just lost. Of course, that would happen to a non-oremium member, but there isn't really a way around that without people abusing the system. Most people who pay for premium wouldn't waste time like that, because they're essentially wasting their own money.

wow on one of the games the last move was made 11 days ago and they still have 28 days of vacation left. This could take a long time to finish.

Now, that makes a whole lot of sense.. I was in a few other tournaments too, where it looked like my opponent was about to run out of time, then, boom, he went on vacation with about 30 minutes to go....

    Hi Spacebux,

I've been thinking about the guy taking vacation in our group. He is a premium member which means he has automatic protection from losing on time - so the system automatically puts him on vacation when he is low on time. I know there is still an issue about not logging in often enough if you are playing a rapid tournament - but maybe this makes it easier to understand.

    @AndrzejSj

I'm betting your mathemetical model is probably pretty accurate to predicting the last day of the first round, actually.

Even though you have fewer people left in the games, as time progresses, I wonder if the average amount of people taking vacation escalates as the people who finish last are/were probably more likely to use the vacation function than those already finished.
