Do multi-round tournaments have the same position each round?  I don't see how it would matter much during the same round because no one has time to study the games of the other players during the 2-6 hour time control.  Coorespondence is a whole different ball of wax though. -Narz

No, same position for all boards in a given round, but not the same for all boards in all rounds. Of course, here you're playing black and white for the same position, so that should balance it. I guess you could argue that a position could have an advantage only a better player could take advantage of, but that would be pretty hard to show. I suppose you could spend the time to study the other games before making your move, but that's more effort than I'm willing to expend. It might be interesting to get the full pgn for the first round and have a computer build an opening tree out of it.

Did any of your pieces disappear in the game before, may be that's the reason, that's what happen to me too......my knight disappeared then when I wanted to move there it said "faild" and then after sometime when i went to the game again my knight was back and I lost my rook....and the game...

"Identical starting positions is pretty standard in Chess 960 tournaments. It is meant to offset any advantage due to the starting position."
