It looks like I am a victim of my own circumstances. I lost a few games as a result of timing out because I set this tournament for no vacations. Oh well, I will play on...

If you beat somebody, and he has for instance 7 points, your tiebreak points go up with 7. It's only to compare what the average opponent was you have defeated. So if you have the same score as someone else, but you beat players with more points, your tiebreak is higher, so you'll advance instead of the other guy.
