Similar comment here. I am just 1950, far from the CM 2300+ players but, like them I presume, I discovered chess.com only recently. I got quickly excited enough to join a tournament when I was at around ~1600 and my rating has since then increased quite a bit.

I completely understand the frustration mentioned here but this sort of situation is bound to happen. One suggestion for chess.com though: there could be an option when creating new tournaments to require participants to have already completed a minimum of 20 games and/or be a registered user for a few months. This would ensure their rating is closer to their actual level. Hopefully, not all tournaments would use that option though!

Well, basically "the CM" you referred to was an example of exactly that. If you don't believe me, look at "his" stats :)

    [edited later]

actually I checked the profile of the person over 2300 (I hope you did too before you started your remarks). He/she started September 14, 2010, so it's quite likely he was also just in the 1600-1800 range on his way to 2300.

I guess there is less evil in the world than suspected? Cool

You are right. There is such possibility. If that is the case it is alright. I don't mean to hurt players that you mentioned.

However this is a naive thought generally. And it is hard to believe that "none" of the high rated players intentionally drop rating to get an easy victory.

You should consider the possibility that people just started playing here and actually had a rating between 1600 and 1800 when they registered. The only way to get a valid rating is by playing, and you can't register for a rating range you are not in.

Sorry to everyone who genuinely was between 1600-1800 before the tournament (not losing points to enter this rating range i mean) but i cannot get why some strong players bother to enter, to win a cup in this range.

I personally am not implying that i would have win this tournament. I actually can't but no other 1600-1800 players can.

There is a CM and players with rating exceeding 2300 for god's sake!!! This should somehow be prevented. It is not fair. They should compete in their own league, instead of crushing weaker players. And they would get much fun.

Tournaments are not meant to be only for cups and points.

Again, i don't blame who actually was between tournament rating range and got better. I respect players who give their all in all matches.

Sorry if I hurt anyone but some things are cristal clear!

@spitfire: i think one of my opponents tried that too.  i guess they're trying to weaken KS pawns, but you're right, not only does black get the pawn center after d5, but the open f-file for the rook!

Two of my opponants as white played 4.dxe and I replied 4...fxe giving me a chance to create a large pawn centre.  What was their thinking behind that?

if you are in 2nd and someone else has clear first, you get eliminated

    It is a single advancement.

tie break is exactly what it seems, a tie break. If two players in the same group finish with the same score, the person with the higher tie break will advance. Tie break is computed by multiplying your score against each opponent, by that opponents score, and adding them together.
