I think you get a good positional advantage out of openings like Queen's Gambit and the Catalan, which I also like.  However, I like taking the challenge of exploring 1. f4.  I have been playing it for years and am still working on understanding certain facets of the opening.  That is simply because I don't do much study outside of my own chess games anymore, which is a blessing and a curse at the same time.  I miss other's innovations often this way, but at least I understand my own ideas, for the better or worse.  I think I slowly keep improving (occasionally I still crash and burn over the board though!) :-)
