And then there were two...

Congratulations to JustBeforeDawn and Geoffb01 for being the only two left standing at the end of 4 rounds!!  I'm not sure how Chess.com will determine who gets the 3rd place trophy, but it's obvious that both of these accomplished players will be sporting a Dark Knight Custom Trophy in their Showcase!!  One of them will even be moving on to The Dark Knight Finals with a whole different set of trophies up for grabs!!

Good Luck to both of you in Round 5, and don't forget to OPEN WITH YOUR DARK KNIGHT!!!

Winners:

#1 1st Place Geoffb01 (2165) England

#1 1st Place JustBeforeDawn (2240) United States

The Dark Knight Opens 7/18

This could very easily be the absolute best Batman movie ever made!  I simply cannot wait.  I guarantee you won't see me playing any of my games within the first few hours of this tournament cuz I will be in the theater watching the movie.

You don't need to be a Batman fan to join this tournament.  You just have to agree that in your games as black, your first move is either Nc6, Nf6, Na6, or Nh6.  In other words, "The Dark Knight Opens."

Since this is my 1st time as a Tournament Host, I welcome all 1st time Tournament Players.  This tournament is open to EVERYONE regardless of your stats.

The response to this idea has been so great that I have started The Dark Knight Opens (group 2).  In keeping with the 4->1 format, the top 4 players in each group will get an invitation to "The Dark Knight Finals."  All games in both groups will begin the moment the movie is released in my time zone.

If you are registered in one group PLEASE DO NOT register in the other!  Think of them as 2 separate groups of the same tournament.

Thanks for playing along with this crazy idea.  I look forward to a fun tournament.

Here we go again.  Undecided

Sorry about all the forfeit games!!  I understand that it's been over 3 months since we started this thing, and it's easy to forget something like opening with your Dark Knight, but that was kinda the whole point of this tournament.  Thank you to all the players who have already resigned from their forfeit games.

Of the 29 players in Round 2, only 9 defaulted with a black pawn, and 5 have already resigned from those games because of it.  Thank you for your cooperation and good sportsmanship!!  Good luck in the rest of your games!!

My opponent isn't resigning and he didn't open with a black knight.

Hmm... so if someone doesn't open with a black knight, do we just wait for them to resign?

Well.... my opponnent is using 6 days per move even though he/she is online everyday for more than 3 hours..... and since I'm up a rook and a knight in both games, he's trying to delay the games..... any way to speed things up?

I'm glad to hear you guys are enjoying the tournament.  Why don't you check out the blog and give us more details.  So far I'm the only one that's really posting over there.  Tell us about how you made it to the second round, or how you went down fighting.  Post your most triumphant win or your most humiliating loss.  I would LOVE to hear some details.

I’ve been asked a couple times now about the number of players advancing to the finals, the number of rounds, etc.  Good questions.  Let's do the math.  There are 3 Major Groups of 100 broken into 25 Minor Groups of 4 each (75 total).  So at least 75 players will advance to round 2 (25 per Major Group) - probably more with all the ties and draws.

Just for simplicity sake let's say 25-32 players advance to round 2 in each Major Group (75-96 total).  That would make 7-8 Minor Groups of 4 per Major Group.  So at least 7-8 players will advance to Round 3 in each Major Group (21-24 total).

7-8 players will be broken into 2 Minor Groups (possibly 3 if 9-12 players advance).  This will produce 2-4 players advancing to Round 4 from each Major Group (6-12 total).

So Round 4 will be the Final Round of The Dark Knight Opens where I guess everyone will essentially advance, they'll just be fighting over the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Custom Trophies set up for The Dark Knight Opens.

At that time, I set up another tournament called The Dark Knight Finals (which is essentially Round 5 of the Dark Knight Tournament) and invite the top 4 players from each Major Group (12 total).  This will make 3 Minor Groups (possibly 4 in case of even 1 tie in round 4).

Regardless, this means that 3-4 players will advance to the 6th and Final Round of the tournament to compete for the Custom Trophies set up for The Dark Knight Finals.

Unless there is at least 1 tie in round 4 which causes there to be 4 groups in round 5 instead of 3, AND there is at least 1 tie in round 5 as well which would cause at least 5 players to advance to Round 6 instead of 4 which would make 2 groups instead of 1 and force a Round 7.

Wow!  6-7 Rounds!  They may have the next Batman movie done before this tournament is complete.  ;)

Sorry to hear that Rodolfo.  I'm afraid those games are now forfeit, and you will need to resign from them.  Thank you.

Slootly:  Equally sorry to hear about your defaulted game.  Thank you for resigning so cooperatively.
