An experiment to see how fast a tournament with a minimum 100 games completed restriction would fill up.

This is the forum topic where the restriction was suggested for official tournaments. The intention is to show it is possible to have official tournaments, where the players are in the same range at the end of the tournament as when the tournament started.

Tournament Creation Date: 2009 05 23

Minimum Games Completed: 100

Maximum Timeout %: 10.  Same as for official tournaments.

Edit 1: I have set the Max Avg Time/Move restriction, for a player to join, to 6 hours. This hopefully will shorten the length of the tournament to months rather than years, to combat rating changes due to players improving over time.

Edit 2: Players over 1400 rating will be removed when the tournament is almost ready to start.

Any of you who are playing in the 5th Chess.com Quick Knockouts, note there is no hourglass symbol designating "No vacation". The setting was changed to allow vacation without being announced.

Vacation is allowed. Changing this condition now would be unfair.

The tournament will surely take four rounds over many months.

I have removed the over 1400 rated players so there will be a small delay for everyone to consider whether vacation use by other players will adversely affect their tournament experience.

To clarify another issue. No matter how we try to stop it, surely some players will raise their rating over 1400 over the course of the tournament. This is allowed as well Smile.

A Max Avg Time/Move of 6 hours indicates that players have been active in the past and with luck it will be the same in the future.

I should say as well though that in a 100-player tournament "real life" vacation or time offline can be expected given the time it will take to complete.

I hope it works - most tournaments I have entered have ended up with 1 or 2 players with a number of matches outstanding against others - who grow frustrated at having to wait!  I have one tournament which started in January in which I have 1 match outstanding again a player who keeps going on vacation and when he is not on vacation seems to wait until he is on the point of being declared 'out of time'.

As of this moment, with less than half a day of registration, there are 52 of 100 places filled.

I did not invite basic members. They are limited to one member-created tournament at a time so those invitations would have had limited success.

With the addition of basic members, who can join any official tournament for which they are eligible, it appears there is a market for official tournaments where player ratings are reasonably reliable.
