Ezra's Open Tourney #1

view all announcements

Round 2 will begin shortly!

Posted by phdezra on Thursday, Oct 30 at 8:04am

Hi all. Well, as I am writing thing the very last game which has been holding us up (located here: http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=7970641) is nearly done. The "holdout" player (who is anyway stuck in a two-move mating net) is nearly out of vacation time (21 hours remaining as of this announcement) and move time. So.... hang on tight, round 2 will begin shortly.

Aside, I have created a second tourny (as of this posting it is 40% filled) with a 1 day/move limit, which will create a much more rapid tournament. Please feel free to join.. it is open to all levels.

Cheers,
Ezra

Yes, dfrezell.... one game remaining before the next round: http://www.chess.com/echess/game.html?id=10443097

Although it has no bearing on who advances form that group and Black is clearly in a superior position... there is nothing that can be done to hurry it along. :(

Hang in there.... .soon enough.

What kills me is we always seem to be waiting on a game that has no bearing on the outcome of the tournament.

Yes, yes... unfortunately, he used "vacation" time and I couldn't simply boot him from the tourney. The honorable thing to do in that situation would have been for him to resign. <sigh>. Round 1 has taken much longer to finish the final couple of games than it should have, but it should be done within next 3 days since he is out of vacation time.

londonplayer - agreed on mate in two. Because after 48.Kg3 (callmeafrog's only move), well... a good excercise for the lower rated players to figure out mate in two. :---)

I'm glad callmeafrog is wasting everyone's time.  He's in a completely lost position and even if he wins, he won't advance to the next round...

Cool, the first round should be over in 22 hours (hopefully). been waiting long enough, lol. Good luck everyone!

EDIT: or not....wow, lol. i guess its ok anyways, everyone in the second round will probably destroy me, and this gives me more time to study :P

I'm not sure it matters much now, but I was wondering if we need to wait for all matches in round 1 to be completed before moving to round 2?  There are still groups where the results matter, but for groups 18, 7, and 4 the remaining games do not matter...unless the win-lose record is used for pairing in round 2.

gumpty - Good question. In group 12, since the second place players (bigfoot318 and count001) have the same score (5-3-0), we look to tie breaks to decide who should get the edge. In this case, they have the exact same tie break score (14) so both players advance. An unusual case, but it does happen. :)

We're two-thirds of the way there as of today (15 July); I expect that we'll be filled up within a week (or less). This is a completely open tournament (e.g., no minimum/maximum rating or time issues), so it seems to be attracting many players.  So far it has attracted a full range of players from below 1000 to almost 2000. Stay tuned...!
