The Najdorf variation is black's more frequently encountered system in the Sicilian Defence. It leads to various complex positions, and I thought it would be interesting to have some practice in it and have its variations compared in an actual tournament with somewhat advanced players. (I don't like timeouts, so the maximum timeout rate registrants may have is 3%)

Have some good games everybody!

All games have started, so we can have an overview of the variations played.
In the 15 games of the first round, white's replies to the najdorf were:

6. Be2 (Classical Najdorf): 6 games (40%). This is supposed to be a 'quiet, more positional' line (Wikipedia). Played succesfuly by Karpov.

Black's answers were: 6... e5 (4), 6... Nc6 (1), 6... e6 (1)

6. Bg5 (Old main line): 4 (27%). Obviously the sharpest answer for white.

Black's answers were: 6... e6 7. f4 Be7  (2), 6... e6 7. f4 Qb6 (1 - This is the notorious Poisoned Pawn variation), 6... e5 7. Nb3 Be7 (1)

6. Be3 (English attack): 4 (27%). This is supposed to be the most popular line currently.

Black's answers were: 6... e5 (3), 6... e6 (1)

6. Bc4 (Fischer-Sozin Attack): 1 (6%). Named after Bobby Fischer, that used to play it with success.

Black's answer was 6... e6

Hopefuly, aside of playing, this tournament can become a good opportunity to discuss a bit on this beautiful variation.

I will try to sum the games up with some statistics on the sub-variations that will be used.

Hi all. I ve played Najdorf for several years it is one of my favorits mainly beacause it leads to very sharp positions,  really difficult to count even the variation tree. I ve abandoned it for a while, so its a good chance to play again- lets do it!

Hey G_Odd and thanks for joining.

If you play the sicilian, you must familiarize yourself with the Najdorf. It's my personal first choice defence, but that doesn't mean I feel really comfortable with it - I seem to lose more games than I win with it.

Hence the tournament...

This should be a practice, I never play this defence (I do not recall I did...). Let's have some nice games though.
