Note: Vacation is allowed

Three players will "square off". "Triangle off" does not have the same "ring".

With groups of three there is a high probability of ties. For a tournament that manages to attract 99 players, anywhere from 44 players (44.4%) to 33 players can advance to the second round.

In terms of awarding the medals in a timely manner:

- one player in the group advancing is good

- two players in the group advancing is bad

- three players in the group advancing is ugly

In terms of players who tend to find themselves eliminated in the first round:

- multiple advancing players is good

- where you have to rely on getting a better tiebreak is bad

- where you are eliminated on a tiebreak is ugly

The tie break rarely works in a group of three but it can happen.

- Group #19 here:  http://www.chess.com/tournaments/pairings.html?id=6293&round=1

- Group #10 here: http://www.chess.com/tournaments/pairings.html?id=13064&round=1

Not to worry though, the Tie Breaks setting is "No" so that ugly situation will not occur. The focus then is for players who do not normally advance to have a chance to do so now.

Minimum Games completed: 255

Maximum Timeout %: 10

Players rated over 2100 will be removed before the tournament starts.
