He expounds further upon the key approach of establishing a plan before developing, evaluating which piece exchanges to make, and in the critical moment, he highlights white's tragic misunderstanding (Be3 instead of Bg5) of how to play IQP positions and the initiative in general... | Watch video

The Tarrasch Defense was "down and out" for a very long time at the highest levels of chess (until Spassky, and much later Kasparov, gave it new life) and that was in large part because of the approach developed by Dr. Rubinstein! GM Bojkov reviews a critical win by Rubinstein in today's video, highlighting the principles of playing against Hanging Pawns and white's subtle maneuvers therein. | Watch video

When he finds himself on the worse end of an Opposite Colored Bishop ending, GM Shankland must make a critical decision: Either try to improve his defensive setup before his opponent increases the pressure, or just stay put. This difficult decision has plagued chess players on the defensive end of things since the beginning of time, and the game Sokolov vs Shankland from this year's World Open was no exception... | Watch video

Is it ever really possible to master something without learning to love it? You can continue to "force feed" yourself technical, and boring positions in the endgame if you want, but you may never learn to like the final stage of chess and therefore, never really become a great endgame player. Or, you can learn to appreciate the finer details of a game like the great Ulf Andersson, and become an endgame master yourself! | Watch video

When the best in the world actually has to play defense, he does it pretty well! In the game McShane-Carlsen, London Classic 2011 the "world's greatest amateur" had the world #1 on the ropes, but when Magnus puts on a defensive clinic (clearly recognizing white's plan as well as which pieces to exchange and when/how to exchange them) the young Englishman is unable to crack black's blockade. Enjoy GM Shankland's review and take more notes on how to play defense! | Watch video
