David Bronstein, GM Browne & the Najdorf

posted by: Arby                     (697 views)

Though the video/article from ChessBase.com is obviously old news, the tribute poured on the late David Bronstein, is timeless. Frederic Friedel conducted this interview on Dec. 7th 2006. In less than 8 minutes, you’ll have a short, yet fascinating story by GM Yasser Seirawan on a Najdorf variation that was played between Bronstein and Browne in Reykjavik, 1990.

   Budapest, Hungary, 1950:

The Tournament of world champion candidates won two young man, David Bronstein and Isaac Boleslavsky, they scored 12-12 points. They played a match to decide who will play with Botwinnik for world championship. The result: 7,5 to 6,5 points to the advantage of Bronstein.

Here is a quotation about Bronstein from the Hungarian chess-journal what was published in 1950: ("Magyar Sakkvilág" as "Hungarian Chess-world")

"The youngest grandmaster of the world (he had born 19, February, 1924) for the most part of games early compelled his opponent to not breaken track. Tipical caracter is his style: after almost unobserved, quiet, preparative moves bravely to rush down the opponent, - he made rich the chess literature."

There is two published games and at second is a comment: "After 1.e4 Bronstein meditated 18 minutes, and selected the Alekhine Defense, Nf6."
