Chess Bio
I started playing chess when I was 5 years old, back in the early ‘80s. I was lucky enough to have a brother near my age and our father was happy to teach us all he knew about the game. One day, in 5th grade, a man showed up at school gathering entries for the interschool chess championship. I signed up enthusiastically… only to be spectacularly knocked out in the qualifying simul by a Scholar’s Mate.
My entire 11-year-old chess life was the sequence: e4, Bc4, Qf3.
He played 3. Qh5 and I answered with Nf6...

I was furious.

What followed was a year of intense preparation for the next tournament. In the spring of '88, the same man came to our school again. I signed up, passed the simul test, played in the two-day tournament, tied for first place among all primary school students, and lost the tie-break match to one of the local club's top talents. My school—thanks to my brother and a classmate who had been training with me all year and also placed in the top ten—won first place.

We were invited to the chess club, and that’s when competitive chess really began. Weekly training sessions with a Master and internal tournaments. Soon after, team events on the junior boards.

I watched my teammates steadily progress, while my performance looked like an EKG chart. Unexpected wins against strong players, unexpected losses to weaker ones. Somewhere before turning 20, I quit.

Then picked it back up around 30. Some of my old teammates had already become titled players, and one of them took me under his wing. We trained, and I started entering tournaments again.

Same EKG pattern. I scored a win against a CM rated over 2100—the game is still in the chess.com database—and in the very next tournament I was losing to 1300s. I quit again.

Came back to competitive chess about ten years later. Same pattern. I quit again.

A person’s psychology—their mindset toward the sport—is more important than their talent. If you work with discipline, you’ll see results regardless of talent. And the opposite holds true as well. Of course, the combination of both is what makes GMs, usually.

Fast forward to 2024, long after the internet revolution. I’m 48 now—why not give it another shot? You don’t need to reconnect with old friends to play again, you don’t even need chess friends at all. You just log in and press play.

Oh, and there’s this thing called Daily Chess! A refined version of correspondence chess I had never tried before. It’s a game of analysis rather than calculation. Very intriguing. I remember people used to tell me I’d learn a lot if I analyzed my games—I never did.
Now, I analyze my games while playing, and I’m learning chess in a way I never imagined I’d enjoy.

The goal?
The S50 (Seniors 50+) category seems like the only reason to look forward to turning 50.

Could it be that I’ll rise right when others begin to decline?
Could I finally realize my potential and break 2000+ OTB as a senior?

I don’t know—I’m just enjoying the journey. For the first time.

Σκακιστικό βιογραφικό:
Άρχισα να παίζω σκάκι 5 ετών στην αρχή της δεκαετίας του ΄80. Ήμουν τυχερός που είχα αδερφό κοντά στην ηλικία μου κι ο πατέρας μας μας δίδαξε ό,τι ήξερε για το σκάκι. Μια μέρα της 5ης δημοτικού, εμφανίστηκε ένας κύριος που μάζευε συμμετοχές για το διασχολικό πρωτάθλημα. Δήλωσα συμμετοχή με ενθουσιασμό, για να αποκλειστώ πανυγηρικά στο προκριματικό σιμουλτανέ από ματ του βοσκού. Όλη μου την 11χρονη ζωή ήξερα το sequence e4, Bc4, Qf3. Μου επαιξε 3. Qh5 κι απαντησα Νf6...

Σκύλιασα.

Ακολούθησε ένας χρόνος εντατικής προετοιμασίας για το ερχόμενο τουρνουά. Την άνοιξη του '88 εμφανίστηκε ο ίδιος κύριος στο σχολείο, δήλωσα συμμετοχή, πέρασα τη δοκιμασία του σιμουλτανέ, έπαιξα στο 2ημερο τουρνουά, ισοβαθμισα στην πρώτη θέση των δημοτικών κι έχασα τo tie-break match από ένα απο τα κορυφαία ταλέντα του τοπικού συλλόγου. Το σχολείο μου, με τη συνεισφορά του αδερφού μου και ενός συμμαθητή μου, που όλη τη χρονια προπονούμασταν μαζί και τερμάτισαν στην πρωτη δεκάδα, κέρδισε την πρώτη θέση.

Κληθήκαμε στον σύλλογο και ξεκίνησε το αγωνιστικό σκάκι. Εβδομαδιαίες προπονήσεις με Μετρ και εσωτερικά τουρνούα. Σύντομα και διασυλλογικά στις εφηβικές σκακιέρες.

Έβλεπα τους συμπαίκτες που να προοδεύουν σταθερά ενώ η αποδόσή μου έμοιαζε με καρδιογράφημα. Αναπάντεχες νίκες εναντίον ισχυρών, αναπάντεχες ήττες εναντίων αδυνάτων. Κάπου πριν τα 20 το παράτησα.

Για να το ξαναπιάσω στα 30. Κάποιοι από τους συναθλητές μου είχαν ήδη γίνει Μετρ, κι ένας απο αυτούς με ανέλαβε. Προπονηθήκαμε και άρχισα να κατεβαίνω πάλι σε τουρνουά.

Απόδοση καρδιογράφημα. Έγραψα νίκη εναντίον CM 2100+ - η παρτίδα υπάρχει και στην chess.com database, και στο επόμενο τουρνουά έχανα από 1300. Τα παράτησα.

Επέστρεψα στο αγωνιστικό σκάκι καμιά 10αριά χρόνια μετά, καρδιογράφημα ξανά. Τα παράτησα.

Η ψυχολογία του ατόμου, η αντιμετώπιση του (κάθε) αθλήματος απ΄ τον αθλητή, έχει μεγαλύτερη βαρύτητα απ΄το ταλέντο του. Αν εργάζεσαι πειθαρχημένα, θα έχεις αποτέλεσμα ανεξαρτήτως ταλέντου. Όπως και το αντίθετο. Ο συνδυασμός φυσικά είναι που κάνει τους GMs, συνήθως.

Φτάνουμε στο 2024, πολλά χρόνια μετά την επανάσταση του ιντερνετ. Στα 48 μου, why not give it a shot again? Δεν χρειάζεται να ξαναβρεις τους παλιούς φίλους για να ξαναπαίξεις, δεν χρειάζεται να γενικά να έχεις σκακιστές φίλους για να παίξεις. You just login and press play.

Αααα, έχει και αυτό το Daily Chess! Βελτιωμένη εκδοχή του Correspondence που δεν είχα δοκιμάσει. Σκάκι ανάλυσης κι όχι calculation. Very intriguing. Θυμάμαι μου έλεγαν πως θα μάθω πολλά αν αναλύω τις παρτίδες μου - ποτέ δεν το έκανα. Τώρα αναλύω τις παρτίδες μου παίζοντας, και μαθαίνω σκάκι με ένα τρόπο που δεν πίστευα ποτέ πως θα μου άρεσε.

Στόχος; Οι κατηγορίες S50 - Seniors μοιαζουν σαν ο μονος λογος να χαρώ που θα κλείσω τα 50.

Λες να ανεβαίνω εκεί που οι άλλοι αρχίζουν να πέφτουν; Λες να κάνω realise το potential μου και να ξεπεράσω τα 2000+ ΟΤΒ ως Senior? (Σταμάτησα στα 1890 fide)
