Robert James Fischer was born March 9, 1943. He was over the board World Champion 1972-1975. Hans Berliner was born January 27, 1929 in Berlin, Germany. Berliner's family moved to the United States to escape the Nazis. Hans was eight. Five years later, he learned chess. He became a master in 1949 and won over the board tournaments, sometimes ahead of grandmasters. He played in four US Championships. He was World Correspondence Champion 1965-1968.

In the following game, Fischer plays his very usual 1.e4 and Berliner responds with 1...Nf6, the Alekhine Defense. Fischer's performance is as smooth as it is instructive. Included in the notes is a game two years later in which the players revisited the same line. Both games were in US Championships. The readers have two for the price of one. The price is to check the dates of the two games to compare the players' ages. Otherwise it will be free. There are additional game references and notes for the price of mouse clicks.
