I played in USCF, ICCF and APCT for many years. I was also a USCF tournament director for a few years. I started playing in tournaments in 1974 and was lucky enough to play 2 US champions in those years. Larry Christiansen and James Tarjan. Arthur Bisguier also gave me the Upset game of the year award in one of those years.

I want to add I think James Tarjan was one of the nicest players I ever met. I was in my first big tournament with a low rating. After the game he spent 30 minutes going over the game . He showed what I did wrong and how to improve. A great guy!
