Hungarian chess grandmaster Andor Lilienthal - who was among the first to be awarded the title in 1950 - has died at the age of 99, the Hungarian Chess Federation said on Saturday.

Lilienthal, who died Saturday at his home in Budapest after a long illness, had been the oldest grandmaster, a federation spokesperson said.

Born in Moscow of Hungarian parents, Lilienthal moved to Budapest when he was young but then made his career in the Soviet Union. In 1976, he returned to Budapest.

He wrote a novel based on the story of his life and chess. It was published in 1985 and was sold in Russian, English and German translations.
