Nigel Short was born on June 1, 1965 in the town of Leigh, located in Lancashire County, England.

Short played for World Chess Championship in 1993, losing 12.5 - 7.5 to Garry Kasparov. The 1993 championship match proved to be highly controversial. A disagreement with the international chess governing body FIDE led to Kasparov and Short creating the Professional Chess Association (PCA) and playing for the title under the auspices of the PCA. This led to FIDE stripping Kasparov of his title and holding a championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman, which was won by Karpov. As a result, there were two chess champions, PCA and FIDE, until the titles were unified in 2006 when Vladimir Kramnik defeated Veselin Topalov.

Short won the British Chess Championship in 1984, 1987 and 1998.
