Before christianity overran europe, there was a significant belief system known as paganism.  During the winter soltice there was a particular tree-worshiping ceremony associated with a celebratory festival ( so to speak ).  The tree, however, was not cut down and killed. 

Please, everyone.  watch seinfeld, and seek out the episode where jerry stiller elaborates on how he created his own holiday in order to counter christmas:  Festivus!   Buy a steel pole, air your grievances and partake in feats of strength! 

I can't help but think the pagans would applaud and shout Costanza!!!! lmao
