GUY FAWKES… A TRUE PATRIOT & HERO, OR A TRAITOROUS DISSIDENT?
Guy Fawkes… looked on by many as a true patriot and hero, and wrongly condemned to death by his own government, for only speaking out against what he felt was a corrupt government… but is this actually true? Let us look at a brief but detailed synopsis, of the intricately woven tapestry, and at what is the historical evidence of Guy Fawkes.
THE PRELUDE: Guy Fawkes, a convert and educated Catholic, was a soldier, whom from 1591-1598 took on the name Guido Fawkes, and went to fight in The Eighty Years War, with Catholic Spain, against The Protestant Dutch. (Research Lutheranism for more history & a connection to the Protestant/Catholic conflict known as The Eighty Years War & to Guy Fawkes.) Later, in 1603 Queen Elizabeth I (whom reigned with both Protestant and Catholic acceptance) died at age 63 and Prince James became King James, (whom was not nearly as accepting to Catholics as QE I) and survived several other assassination attempts at the hands of Lord Cobham, and the more famous Sir Walter Raleigh, before the infamous Gunpowder Plot of Guy Fawkes and other would-be conspirators.
THE FINAL STRAW: In 1603 the newly crowned King James immediately flexed his political and religious-conviction’s muscle, and instituted (as perceived by Fawkes) an increasingly oppressive attitude towards Catholics, which he (Fawkes) felt needed to be dealt with; but when in 1604 King James & the Hampton Court Conference (due to numerous inaccuracies in many mistranslated versions) commissioned a new Bible to be better and more properly translated, this was the final straw for Fawkes, and considered the act of King James & the Hampton Court to be heresy against Pope & God!
THE GUNPOWDER PLOT: On November 5th 1605, Guy Fawkes, as a member of a clandestine group of 13 Catholic dissident conspirators, (vehement against Protestant Monarchy) plotted to assassinate King James and Court, (by over the course of several prior months) and placed numerous gunpowder-barrel explosives in the cellars of Parliament, to kill King James, and replace him with his daughter Princess Elizabeth on the throne, and to reestablish a Catholic Monarchy. The plan was thwarted and Guy Fawkes, along with other conspirators, were sentenced to be hanged. To commemorate the thwarted assassination attempt on King James, bonfires (and in 1650 fireworks) were encouraged to always REMEMBER, REMEMBER, THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER, and a day of thanksgiving declared.
IN CONCLUSION: Guy Fawkes was not an honorable patriotic protester, bravely standing up to a corrupt government, at all; Fawkes was a co-conspirator and religious zealot to the point of fanaticism, and a coward, whom placed bombs in the shadows of Parliament, to murder the then current King and his Court. And why? Because righteous Catholicism must triumph over (literally believed) demon possessed Protestant evil, and the Bible was not to be changed!
Still think the mask of Fawkes symbolizes righteous power to the people?
