I think trying to understand your opponents and your own mistakes is the key to improvement.  There are other things one must attune to as well, like being aware of your opponents resources, which is more or less kinda a different way of phrasing "get into the head of your opponent."  If you can think like your opponents, at your level, and understand what type of mistakes they make, as well as yourself, and learn to abstain from doing these things, I think, as someone in one of my previous posts said, is great for chess improvement.
