What is the Magnus Smith Trap?
The Magnus Smith Trap is an openning trap in the Sicilian Defense.
In the diagram below, find the winning move for white.
Do you see it? The move is Bxf7+! forcing the king to move away from the protection of the queen. This tactic is called deflection, but we will cover that tactic in another blog.
The Magnus Smith Trap was namned after Magnus Smith, the founder of this trap and three-time Canadian chess champion.
How Do I Get There?
Now to tell the truth, black isn't completely lost if he declines the pawn sacrifice on move 8 though his position definately isn't something you would want to go for.
