In an effort to improve my understanding of chess tactics and analysis I have picked up "Korchnoi's 400 Best Games" with the intention of playing through my favourite players games. What I am aiming for is a better understanding of tactics rather than any particular opening system.

Viktor Korchnoi was born in Leningrad on July 23rd 1931. He left the USSR in 1976, applying for asylum in Holland. His final home was Switzerland until his death in 2016. Korchnoi started to apply himself to chess in 1944 (aged 13), becoming a Soviet Master in 1951 and an International Grandmaster in 1956.

Our first game in the aforementioned book is from the 1946 Leningrad Junior Championship, in which Korchnoi finished in joint eleventh place.

I have played this game through several times and been struck by the simplicity of the moves of the young Korchnoi, who was only fifteen at the time.
