Another legend is gone. (Taimanov)
GM Mark Taimanov; 1926-2016. (Cdc story.)
I was in the military when I was a young man ... and I was fortunate to travel the world on the government's dime. Back in the 1980's, I attended (as a spectator) many tournaments in Europe. I met dozens of GM's, to include a young(er) Garry Kasparov, GM Jan Timman ... and also GM Mark Taimanov.
Taimanov was a real chess legend. While many people might only remember Taimanov for his loss in the Candidates Tournament (to Bobby Fischer), Taimanov won many tournaments, he played many of the greats in chess, (Botvinnik, Fischer, Smyslov, Korchnoi, etc.). Taimanov also has a branch of the Sicilian Opening that bears his name. And chess was not his only talent! In his youth, Taimanov was a film star. Later he became a world-class concert pianist and he also had a fine singing voice as well. RIP Mark Taimanov.
