With a performance rating of 2855 over the first six months of 2018, Anish Giri inched out Magnus Carlsen (2853). Both Carlsen and Giri started the year off with a strong performance at the Tata chess tournament, where both scored +5. Crucial games that made a difference in the second quarter were Giri's victory over Caruana in the Bundesliga playoffs and Carlsen's loss against So in Norway Chess. In the end Giri performed slightly better than Carlsen despite his loss against Carlsen in the Gashimov memorial.

Giri started the year as number 15 of the world and due to his excellent results climbed to sixth place on the July FIDE rating list. Giri played only 23 classical games in the first half of 2018, fewer than his colleagues.

Ding Liren is third on the performance rating list.  Liren scored 5 out of 5 score in the Chinese league.
