HESTEC Tournament

HESTEC Tournament

This weekend I competed in the HESTEC Tournament, which is a tournament UTRGV has hosted the past 3 years I believe. Competition is usually decent, with most players in the open section being 1600-2000 and this year GM Vladimir Belous played as well.

Time control was G 25+5, not much time to work with, but it was alright, I was never in time trouble with the exception of my game vs the GM.

My first round was vs some 1400.

My second game was a lot tougher, I was playing a 2000 rated player, and although he was provisional I had played him some blitz games before and I knew his provisional rating was pretty accurate.

I ended up saving the draw after I managed to trade all my pawns for white's b and h-pawns thus giving white a rook pawn to try to win with, and he couldn't.

Anyways, I played Ozzy on round 3, and unfortunately for me, I lost the game and I won't hear the end of it. I could make up excuses like the fact that I only had 3 hours of sleep and I was also helping making sure the tournament and concessions were running smoothly throughout the tournament, but I won't. I messed up in the opening and he outplayed me after that.

Anyways, here's the game, but I won't bother annotating it.

After that I played someone rated 700, which surprised me because he had two points already. Unfortunately for him, he blundered a pawn in the opening and I had an easy game after that.

On my final round I played the Grand Master. I was really excited, I knew I was going to lose, but you don't always get to play rated games against GMs. He didn't take any time moving, and at the end of the game I had about a minute left while he has 18, but I felt like I played very well up until about move 30.

I ended up with a respectable 2.5/5 and although I lost 6 rating points in this tournament, I was very pleased with my play with the exception of my game against Ozzy. I will just have to wait till next time to beat him.
