In 1897 Members from the House of Representatives and the British House of Commons set up the first intercontinental game of chess among elected government leaders.

They did this by transmitting moves by Telegraph, each move took 40 seconds to cross the Atlantic. (Which puts my internet lag into perspective) 

Here is Board 1. between Sir Horace Curzon Plunkett Member for South Dublin and Richmond Pearson, Representative from North Carolina. Sir Horace whips up a devasting attack and debilitates Richmond in 16 moves. All of which he did in less than 5 minutes.
