Cheers

Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot
Wouldn't you like to get away?

All those nights when you've got no lights, the check is in the mail
And your little angel hung the cat up by it's tail
And your third fiancee didn't show

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You wanna be where you can see our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead, the morning's looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe and didn't even write
And your husband wants to be a girl

Be glad, there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came
You want to go where people know, people are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

Where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came

Chess.com is a lot like the bar "Cheers," set in Boston, in the television series of the same name.  It is a place where we should be able to abandon our worries, socialize, play a game or two, and leave the world behind.

I think I am beginning to find that sort of refuge, and it is nice.  Now, some people would call it "escapism."  Other would say that chess is an excuse to avoid the real world.  Still others call it an unhealthy obsession.

Not for me.  I put the game away for over 30 years and made my way through the "real world," with all its pain, and stress, and disappointments.  Stop the train!   I want to get off!!

Here I can speak openly with friends, find a degree of comfort and emotional support unlike real life.  We can laugh at silly jokes, and cry at sad stories, and empathize with the cruel misfortunes life sometimes deal to our friends and ourselves.  It's nice to be where everybody knows my name.

The likelihood is that I will never meet 99.999% of you in person.  But if I did, I would unabashedly give you a big hug.  People are all the same. :-)
