Only two Grandmasters have birthdays today: Zurab Azmaiparashvili of Georgia who was born on this day, May 16th, 1960, and he became a Grandmaster in 1988; and Evgeni Janev of Bulgaria, who was born in 1973 and became a GM in 2002.

Though I could not find much information about Evgeni Janev, I featured Zurab Azmaiparashvili last year on the "Todays Grandmaster" segment of my live stream at twitch.tv/kingsbischop. For that reason, I would like to feature Janev in today's blog.  The only thing I could learn about his chess results is that he won a tournament at Madrid in 2003; and another at Barcelona in 2005.

I did find one very amazing victory that he scored with Black against Vladimir Georgiev at Elgoibar, Spain in 2001. What is remarkable about the particular game you are about to see is that Janev literally beat Georgiev at his own game.

In 1999 Georgiev took the dark side of the force against Svetlin Stojanov at Plovdiv Bulgaria. It was a game that White resigned after only 18 moves, and I have it here without comment or annotation:

Two years pass and Georgiev is paried with Janev at Elgoibar, Spain. This time Georgiev has White and Janev has Black. I would love to know if Janev knew that after move 10 the position was identical to the one reached in the Stojanov vs. Georgiev game two years earlier. Apparently Georgiev did not recognize it and he played the EXACT SAME MOVES as White that his opponent had played two years prior INCLUDING THE MISTAKES. Georgiev resigned at the exact same point in the game that his opponent had resigned against him two years prior.
