2017 targets

After going up a Jeans size and consuming more beer and cheese than anybody should do in the last few days it's the time for looking forward and asking the difficult questions, like how cold does it have to be before I can skip a run? Will I go to the gym more than three times this year? And of course, what should I target in 2017 for my Chess play?

The most important thing with goal setting is to set achievable and measurable goals. Fortunately Chess gives a good bias free metric (rating) to measure against. I've given my goals for 2017 some thought and decided that in terms of my rating (which has improved from around 1050 to 1180 in the last three months) I would be moderately happy with a 200 point improvement in 2017 to 1400, with a 1500 stretch goal and so have set bronze, silver and gold rating related targets for daily chess and rapid chess. I'm not setting any goals for blitz or bullet.  I prefer the longer time controls and these will naturally improve as I play daily/rapid.

Daily

Bronze - 1400

Silver - 1450

Gold - 1500

Rapid

Bronze - 1400

Silver - 1450

Gold - 1500

I will have a good indicator of which of the three targets I will achieve by the point I hit 1300. I think if I can achieve 1300 by March/April then I am on track for gold/silver. May is probably par for Bronze and anything after May means I may struggle to achieve 1400 as I know it will be more and more challenging to improve as I play stronger players.
