In the second round I had White against a Canadian expert, Joe Roback of Vancouver. (His Canadian and USCF ratings are both over 2000, but I used our FIDE ratings below.) Here's the game.

Chalk this one up to a lack of opening preparation. There's some excellent analysis of the Morra declined with 3...Nf6 near the end of IM Marc Esserman's wonderfully entertaining book, Mayhem in the Morra, which I started going through after this game. Next time I face this in a tournament I'll be better prepared!

Despite the loss, I'm proud of myself for playing something new in a tournament game. You do all the opening preparation you can, but in the end you just don't know what you're going to get over the board. I find that I progress more as a player if I try new ideas rather than staying on familiar ground, even if sometimes it blows up in my face.
