Why You Should Study Masters' Games?

Good morning! Thanks for your feedbacks about my blog yesterday.

Yesterday, i answered "Why You Should Analyse Your ALL Games" with one of my games. Now i'm gonna do the same. Let's jump right into the action with checking the position below.

...

...

What a simple position. Despite i did a positional mistake with putting my knight on c3 instead of d2, i'm better. How did i know i made this "mistake"?

That's because i've seen some of Steinitz's games (First official world chess champion). He always made that manuever with Nd2-f1-g3 or Nd2-f1-e3. So now, i can't get my knight to e3 that fast, only g3, with Nc3-e2-g3.

That is already an answer, but i have an even stronger answer. Check the position again.

What would you play in this position? Ne2? h3 to stop nasty Bg4 ideas? Or just push d5?

Actually both Ne2 and h3 are also good, but i found an even better move, because i remembered my favourite positional Tarrasch game. He was another grandmaster in Steinitz's days and he explained his gamestyle, that means he was one of the best chess teachers ever.

Let's check a part of his game below.

I also have to mention that game has a very long combination starting from move 8.

...

The position we reach is a bit similar, right? Not a bit, A LOT. Let's continue.

...

As you can see, white played one of the best games ever played, also the reason why Ruy Lopez really works. After studying this game, we also know a bit Ruy Lopez ideas. Let's check the position 3rd time.

...

What would you play here? Bxc6? Nice job, that's what i played!

Sadly, game has not ended yet, so i can't post the full game. But my main purpose was not posting my game and bragging. I answered the question on the title. If i didn't see this game, i would never think about Bxc6. But now, both me and you know how to punish this mistake.

Position now:
