All IReLand Checkmate Jnr. Finals
All Ireland Checkmate Primary School Finals 2014 in south Court Hotel in Limerick May 20th.
St Joseph's PS , Gorey exceeded last year's success in this year's final by coming 2nd place overall, one game behind their county rivals, Gaelscoil Enniscorthy, the over all winners . Gorey won 16 out of 24 games in a very exciting and highly competitive 6 rounds .
Organiser , John Alfred, had never seen such a close and tense finish . The competition has been going since 1995. All agreed that there was a higher standard than ever this year in the finals, with teams from St Mary's Haddington Rd, Johnstown and St Pat's Castlebar taking part . Wexford county excelled themselves with Bunclody also doing themselves proud .
The team included Robert Kelly , Seán Callaghan, Micheál Kennedy and Evan Byrne. Patrick Hayes O Conner and Barry Kenny were also on the panel .Gorey's talented player Seán Callaghan was awarded second best individual in the competition .He was only beaten by Li Henry , Dublin, who is the present under 14 Irish champion.
