I took 1st place in the u1300 section of the Mid American Open
Great news, everybody! I took 1st place in my section in the Mid American Open chess tournament! Not only did I have a lot of fun, but I earned a big cash prize of $750, and my rating skyrocketed. I had an almost perfect score of four wins and one draw, so I'm pretty satisfied with how things went.
In my first game, I played a 1300 player and used accurate endgame technique to win after my opponent dropped a pawn. You can view the game here: https://www.chess.com/emboard?id=2930550
In my second game, I was up against an 1200 player, and took a clear advantage within the first dozen of moves or so. I played the King's Gambit and he responded with the Faulkbeer Counter Gambit, so it was certain that the game would be a wild attacking one. Although he forced me to go uncastled, I quickly had a pawn advantage and the bishop pair, and from there my advantages only increased.
