Every '1.d4 player' faces Queens Gambit Declined very often. This is probably the most common opening after 1.d4 among players in the rating range  between 1000-2000. If you are bored playing popular lines with the Bg5-move and looking for something fresh and solid - you should think about Catalan Opening.
Below you can see the Catalan starting position.

By developing the light-squared Bishop to the g2-square White gets the strong piece that attacks the center. Catalan Opening is experiencing a genuine renaissance since the first decade of the 21st century and was played by the top players like Carlsen, Kramnik, Topalov or Anand.

That solid but dynamic opening was played by several World Champions. I like especially the game played by Alexander Alekhine that destroys his opponent very in a very nice way. You can watch it below with comments made by Alekhine.

Everyone who wants start to play Catalan Opening has to learn how to play against 9 Blacks plan (from the Catalan starting position).
